BIO
Malissa Long grew up near Beaumont, TX with a mother and grandmother who both sewed for a local fashion designer. This inspired Malissa to become a designer, so she majored in Fashion Merchandising and studied patternmaking at San Houston University. After graduation, she found work at a fabric store in Austin, where she discovered the fiber art field.

A career move brought her to Kansas in 2016, where she unfortunately experienced several health setbacks and found her dream job eliminated. She turned to stitching during her treatments, creating several award-winning pieces, which pushed her to reinvest her time and energy in fiber art.

Currently the Textile Lead and At-Large Director of MakeICT and MakeICT's representative for the Entrepreneurship Task Force, Malissa is excited to focus on a new branch of her practice: upcycling. She is making dresses out of ties, jackets from bottle caps, and uses aluminum from discarded cans as embellishments. All of her fabrics are recycled or sustainable. Malissa is also interested in assisting other local designers to refine their technical skills and produce their own collections.

Our two organizations can provide exhibition and work space, promotional and marketing platforms, assistance and support, and a $1000 equipment purchase award. In addition, the recipient will receive a scholarship to participate in Harvester Art’s professional development program Artist INC launching this summer.
