2018 Neighborhood Superstar

Friday, November 30, 2018 (All day) to Friday, December 28, 2018 (All day)

With Harvester Arts, Fisch Haus is pleased to announce the 2018 Neighborhood Superstar: Malissa Long. Malissa is a fiber artist who works primarily in upcycled and sustainable materials. Her work will be on display at Fisch Haus throughout November and December of 2018, with Final Friday receptions on Nov 30 and Dec 28 from 7-10PM. More details to follow!

BIO
Malissa Long grew up near Beaumont, TX with a mother and grandmother who both sewed for a local fashion designer. This inspired Malissa to become a designer, so she majored in Fashion Merchandising and studied patternmaking at San Houston University. After graduation, she found work at a fabric store in Austin, where she discovered the fiber art field.

A career move brought her to Kansas in 2016, where she unfortunately experienced several health setbacks and found her dream job eliminated. She turned to stitching during her treatments, creating several award-winning pieces, which pushed her to reinvest her time and energy in fiber art.

Currently the Textile Lead and At-Large Director of MakeICT and MakeICT's representative for the Entrepreneurship Task Force, Malissa is excited to focus on a new branch of her practice: upcycling. She is making dresses out of ties, jackets from bottle caps, and uses aluminum from discarded cans as embellishments. All of her fabrics are recycled or sustainable. Malissa is also interested in assisting other local designers to refine their technical skills and produce their own collections.

The Neighborhood Superstar program is specifically intended to benefit an individual who may not have had access or pursued these sorts of resources in the past. The award is meant to assist with realizing the creative project (of any discipline) of someone working in our local Wichita community.

The 2018 Neighborhood Superstar Award has been made possible in part by the generosity of the David and Joan Farha Charitable Account and the Fidelity Bank Foundation.

Do you have a friend or neighbor who has been quietly working away on a creative pursuit for years but not had the chance, resources, or opportunity to really shine? Harvester Arts and Fisch Haus are teaming up once again for the Neighborhood Superstar Award. Our two organizations can provide exhibition and work space, promotional and marketing platforms, assistance and support, and a $1000 equipment purchase award. In addition, the recipient will receive a scholarship to participate in Harvester Art’s professional development program Artist INC launching this summer.
