We’re pleased to introduce our Spring 2019 artist-in-residence Sukaina Kubba, an Iraqi-Canadian artist and architect recently back in North America from Scotland, where she received her Master in Fine Art Practice (Painting) from The Glasgow School of Art. She will live and work at the Fisch Haus from February 15-March 31.
In collaboration with MakeICT‘s Malissa Long (the 2018 Neighborhood Superstar), Sukaina will be running a workshop on March 2nd from 11am-4pm at MakeICT, revolving around the possession and discarding of nylon stockings, as well as other objects of female adornment such as jewelry, make up, scarves, etc. The workshop will explore the use of a scanner, digital phone cameras, and writing, to record and narrate stories of these materials. Sukaina’s research in Wichita will focus on some of the major industries based in Wichita Kansas – Integrated Fibers, Foams and Rubbers and Aviation, as they relate to communities and material culture in the City. Much of her recent research into materials and cities has centered around narratives in the development of petrochemical industries, modes of transport (aviation, airports and roads) and the relationships of late industrial cities (Petro-cities) to the development of material culture.
She plans to explore industrial materials that are at the core of her research and practice: rubber (liquid latex, sheet rubber and vulcanized rubber); PVC; nylons (tights), retro-reflective fibers, and industrial resins; and hopefully expand to some new materials such as Spandex, Lycra, and sponge-rubber. Sukaina is interested in the transformation of materials that are by-products of the rubber and petrochemical industries into objects of fashion and fetish, how these by-products are stored, transported, and how and if they bio-degrade.
During the residency Sukaina will use the workshop and printmaking facilities available at Fisch Haus and MakeICT. In addition, she will conduct research with several pre-selected companies and organizations. This research will be recorded and sculptural (image and object making); as well as highlighting the history and manufacture of materials specific to Wichita and the State of Kansas.
